| Hurricane Wilma arrived in Key West on Monday, October 24, 2005. Her category 3 winds did significant damage, but most of the residents would agree it was the storm surge that set the city on its ear flooding first the Atlantic side of the island and then swamping the bay side. Officials estimate that 78% of the residents ignored the evacuation order and stayed to endure Wilma's wrath. |
